Hemodialysis is a type of kidney replacement therapy performed with a dialysis machine. The blood of a patient travels through a system of tubes into an «artificial kidney» where it gets purified and then returns to the body. Hemodialysis is performed by qualified staff at medical centres. It is necessary to come to the treatment three times a week.
The procedure is performed through vascular access - arteriovenous fistula, prosthesis or dual-lumen catheter. The patient is admitted for treatment with an already formed access. Its dysfunction (failure to provide blood sampling at a rate of not less than 300 ml / min), most commonly, requires surgical intervention.
Before each procedure, a member of staff checks vitals, including the patient’s weight and blood pressure, cleans the dialysis access site, and then connects the patient to the dialysis machine. A session lasts around 4-5 hours. The staff monitor the condition of the patient and control the machine all the time. When the dialysis is finished, they disconnect the patient from the «artificial kidney» and write down their metrics.
